Charlotte was born on August 13, 2013. After trying to have a baby for over 6 years and conceiving after IVF, we finally had our beautiful wonderful miracle baby. When Charlotte was three days old, the nurse practitioner performing her discharge check-up heard a heart murmur and immediately started testing our baby girl to figure out what was wrong. Charlotte received her first echocardiogram, electrocardiogram and other testing that day. The results told us that Charlotte was in heart failure and had been born with Congenital Endocardial Cushion Defects. She had two Atrial Septal Defects, one Ventricular Septal Defect, along with mitral valve regurgitation and mitral stenosis. The cardiologist treated her heart condition with medication until her first life-saving open heart surgery, to place patches on her heart, at 21 months old. She still has mitral valve regurgitation and stenosis which will eventually require more surgeries.
Charlotte has undergone a countless number of appointments often accompanied by echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, labs, and other tests. She has also been diagnosed with Apraxia, hypotonia, and most recently was diagnosed as having a genetic duplication on her 7th chromosome. She works extremely hard each week in speech, occupational, and physical therapies to overcome and cope with her weaknesses.
Charlotte has experienced so much in her almost 6 years of life and remains an upbeat, caring, determined person. She is looking forward to starting kindergarten in August. She loves playing with her little brother, cat, dog, and friends. She is a Cleveland Sports fan and loves to root on her Indians, Browns, and Cavs. She loves all things Disney, Princesses, pink, purple, dolls, Barbie’s, Legos, and Shopkins. Charlotte wants to become a doctor or teacher when she grows up. We are very grateful to have A Special Wish in our lives.
